A Brief Overview about William Shakespeare
William Shakespeare, a celebrated English poet, dramatist, and thespian, was born in 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon. His birthday is typically commemorated on 23 April (see to When was Shakespeare born), which is also thought to be the date of his death in 1616.
Shakespeare was an exceptionally productive author during the Elizabethan and Jacobean eras of British theater, sometimes known as the English Renaissance or the Early Modern Period. Shakespeare’s plays are arguably his most enduring bequest, yet, they do not encompass his entire body of work. Shakespeare’s poems continue to be much appreciated in contemporary times.
Surviving records provide insight into the familial environment of William Shakespeare’s early childhood and the lives of his relatives. John Shakespeare wedded Mary Arden, and as a result, they procreated eight offspring. John and Mary had the tragic loss of two daughters in infancy, resulting in William assuming the role of their eldest child. John Shakespeare was employed as a glove-maker, but he also gained prominence in the town of Stratford by assuming municipal roles. Due to his high social standing, it is quite probable that he enrolled his children, including William, in the nearby grammar school.
William Shakespeare resided with his family in their residence on Henley Street until he reached the age of eighteen. At the age of eighteen, Shakespeare entered into matrimony with Anne Hathaway, who was twenty-six years old. The marriage was expedited due to Anne’s preexisting pregnancy at the time of the wedding. They had a total of three children. Susanna, their first daughter, was born half a year after their wedding, and was subsequently joined by twins Hamnet and Judith. Hamnet passed away at the age of 11.

William Shakespeare’s presence in London
Shakespeare’s career commenced in London, but at what time did he relocate there? Shakespeare’s twins were officially baptized in 1585, and his fame in London was firmly established by 1592. However, the events that occurred during the years in between are widely regarded as an enigma. These years are commonly referred to by scholars as ‘The Lost Years’.
Shakespeare’s initial printed works were released while he was in London. The poems consisted of two lengthy works, namely ‘Venus and Adonis’ (1593) and ‘The Rape of Lucrece’ (1594). In addition, he assumed the role of a founding member in The Lord Chamberlain’s Men, an ensemble of performers. Shakespeare served as the company’s consistent playwright, creating an average of two plays per year for nearly two decades.
He stayed with the firm for the entirety of his professional life, during which it transformed into The King’s Men with the support of King James I (starting from 1603). Shakespeare composed several renowned tragedies, including King Lear and Macbeth, and also crafted exceptional romances such as The Winter’s Tale and The Tempest during his tenure in the theater.

Shakespeare’s literary creations
In total Shakespeare’s literary repertoire comprises 38 plays, 2 narrative poems, 154 sonnets, and a diverse collection of other poetry. There are currently no surviving original manuscripts of Shakespeare’s plays. We owe the existence of approximately half of Shakespeare’s plays to a specific ensemble of performers from his company. Following Shakespeare’s death, the plays were gathered for publication, thereby ensuring their preservation. The essays were compiled in a collection called the First Folio, with ‘Folio’ referring to the size of the paper used. The collection included 36 of his theatrical works, but did not include any of his poems.
Shakespeare’s impact is extensive and varied, with his plays inspiring numerous adaptations in various genres and civilizations. His plays have had a lasting impact on both the theater and film industries. The Complete Works of William Shakespeare is a compilation of all his plays, sonnets, and other pieces, which have been published in various editions. William Shakespeare remains a highly significant literary figure in the English language.
Introducing New Place: a residence located in Stratford-upon-Avon
Shakespeare’s prosperity at the London theaters rendered him significantly affluent, and by 1597, he had the means to acquire New Place, the most spacious residence in the municipality of Stratford-upon-Avon. Despite working primarily in London, he kept strong connections with his hometown.
Recent archeological findings at Shakespeare’s New Place site indicate that Shakespeare resided in London only sporadically. Indications are that he allocated his time between Stratford and London, with a commute lasting two or three days. Subsequently, it is possible that throughout his later years, he allocated a greater amount of time in Stratford-upon-Avon than what was previously speculated by researchers. However, there is no need to be concerned!
